Tube, fish and swim in the Rocky Broad River – right out your back door!

Like a treasured jewelry box, Green Roof River Cottage beckons you to discover its many nooks and crannies and delight in its enticing contents. Rushing water over bare feet, mountain breezes from lofty porches, and fond memories of sun-kissed afternoons are just a few of the gems waiting for you when you vacation at this enchanting mountain cottage.

This 1,800 square foot cottage, one of the earliest built in the Hickory Nut Gorge, has been lovingly restored and appointed with many modern amenities, but still has the quirkiness and charm of a bygone era.

River access from Green Roof River Cottage is like no other. Located on the Rocky Broad River in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, this historic mountain cottage allows you to wade, tube, swim, and fish right from your own backyard. Look no further for the best fishing spot in the gorge - you've got it right here at Green Roof River Cottage.

Not a fisherman? Then enjoy an outdoor meal at the picnic table down by the river. Grill hotdogs and roast marshmallows in the fire pit, or just sit and enjoy your favorite book with the sounds of the rushing river in the background. Children and adults alike will appreciate the large, beautifully landscaped, and level backyard, a rarity in this mountainous area. After a dip in the river, challenge friends and family to a rousing game of volley ball, badminton or horseshoes. The fresh mountain air will give you extra energy you never knew you had!

The cottage itself is as delightful as its river setting. On the grounds surrounding the cottage, stone steps and a rock wall evoke memories of days gone by. With old fashioned plants such as Bearded Iris, Daylilies, and Hosta, you’ll think you’re in your grandmother’s backyard flower garden. English Ivy entwines along decades old stone chimneys, lending warmth and familiarity to this captivating outdoor space. There’s even an historic above-ground stone Springhouse, once used for keeping meat and dairy products cool, but now storing tubes and floats for the river and firewood for the cottage’s 4 wood burning fireplaces.

Inside, the cottage has been lovingly restored so the entire living space is upscale yet comfortable. Two steps up from the main floor is the spacious master bedroom with gleaming antique hardwood floors and French doors opening to a large, covered porch overlooking the river. Here you can enjoy your morning coffee in the porch swing as you wake up to warblers singing from the backyard Japanese Red Maple.

In the evenings, greet the cool mountain air by cozying up in the sumptuous king sized 4-poster bed before a crackling fire in the stone fireplace. The second bedroom, which is located on the main floor, has a queen sized antique bed, a stone fireplace and a charming view of the outdoor perennial garden. There is a full bath with tub/shower combination across the hall from this bedroom, which is also easily accessible from the master bedroom. Both bedrooms have small TV’s with DVD players.

Downstairs from the main floor is a comfortable living area with 2 leather sleeper sofas, another stone fireplace (also wood burning), and a 54" Wide Screen High Definition TV with cable, music channels, and DVD player. There are also games and books for children for rainy day fun. The fully appointed kitchen opens to a charming rock patio with a gas grill, and the dining room boasts the fourth stone fireplace. There is a half bath off the kitchen and a laundry area with stacked washer/dryer. From the downstairs living area, step out to the large screened-in porch that overlooks the river and brings the outdoors in. Here you can enjoy a meal at the extra dining table, rock a while in one of the over-sized wooden rockers, or curl up on the futon for a quiet nap. Some guests even prefer to spend the night on the porch futon while the katydids lull them to sleep....this is what mountain vacations are all about.

Once you visit, you'll want to return year after year, for this is where memories are made.
